Ooty
Day-1
Banasura Sagar Dam
Located in Kalpetta, about an hour's drive from Wayanad, the Banasura Sagar Dam is the largest earthen dam in India and the second largest in Asia. Along with the magical views that the dam offers, people also like to visit because of the trekking opportunities here. Surrounded by lush greenery, one can enjoy boating and speedboat rides here. Various rock formations from ancient times attract the interest of the tourists too. You will be amazed to know that stacks of stones and boulders were used to construct this extravagant dam. The scenic surroundings of the dam also serve as shelters for overnight campers and an ideal picnic spot for family and friends. The vast spread of crystal clear water dotted with tiny islands is a treat to see and photograph.
Pookode Lake
Located 13km from Kalpetta and spread over 13 acres, Pookode Lake is a natural freshwater lake. Pykara Waterfalls
Located 20 kilometers away from Ooty on the Ooty-Mysore road, Pykara Waterfalls is one of the most enjoyable and scenic picnic spots of Ooty. Originating from the Mukurti peak, the Pykara river flows towards North to reach the edge of a plateau which creates these beautiful two tiered falls. With options to enjoy boating and local food along with scenic views of nature, the place attracts many tourists. The area surrounding the waterfall is inhabited by the Toda settlement, a Dravidian, ethnic group of tribal people who live in the Nilgiri mountains of Tamil Nadu.
Edakkal Caves
Explore the rich cultural heritage through Edakkal Caves tour. It is one of the few places in India with stone age carvings on the rocks. As per locals, the cave is sacred as it has witnessed the presence of many lords. Do see the walls with the carvings of ancient stone scripts, ancient weapons, symbols, animal figures, etc. The rock art in the cave dates back to 6,000 BCE. Edakkal Caves Timings and Entry Fee: Entry ticket is ₹50 per person. Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary
The Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, popularly known as Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary, is a rainforest which connects Nagarhole and Bandipur parks in Karnataka and Mudumalai in Tamil Nadu. It is located around 16 km away from Sulthan Bathery. Established in 1973 with an area of 345 sq km, the sanctuary is rich in flora and fauna and forms an integral part of Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. It was brought under Project Elephant in the year 1991-1992 and is considered to be the second largest one in Kerala. Elephants roam freely here and tigers are sighted occasionally as well. Various species of deer, monkeys and birds also live here. The Reserve is also home to various species of birds, butterflies and insects. The trees and plants in the sanctuary are typical of the south Indian moist deciduous forests and semi-evergreen forests. A drive along the road to Muthanga and further, offers chances to watch these roaming animals. Out of four ranges, Muthanga and Tholpetty ranges are mostly visited by the tourists’ to Wayanad. The two eco-tourism centres in Wayanad wildlife sanctuary helps to create conservation awareness in the minds of the travellers and to well maintain the sanctuary and its premises. Wayanad Heritage Museum
Wayanad Heritage Museum is also known as Ambalavayal Heritage Museum and is located at Ambalavayal, 12 kms south of Sulthan Bathery in Wayanad district if Kerala India. It is housed in a small heritage building which reflects the traditional architecture of Kerala. There are two grey pillars that support the roof of the portico which leads to a wooden doorway. Its entrance has four steps with ornamental balus trades on either side. This museum depicts the story of Wayanad from Neolithic times to the 17th century displaying stone weapons bows and arrows, clay sculptures etc. It is managed by the District Tourism Promotion Council of Kerala and is one of the museums with the largest collections of the second century. The museum is divided into four blocks the first one is Veerasmruthi is dedicated to the people who lost their lives while fighting in the battle. It is also known as Memories of Hero’s and Hero stones or memorials to the warriors are exhibited here. The second block is called the Devasmruthi also known as Memories of God and has many images of various deities displayed here. The third block is called as the Jeevansmruthi or Memories of Life and it displays day to day objects used some dating back to the Stone Age. This gallery also has ornaments, weapons of war and musical instruments displayed as well. The forth block is called Gothrasmruthi and it shows equipment used for farming, hunting, cooking etc,
Tea Museum
Set atop one of the many hills of the Nilgiris District, the Tea Museum is located adjacent to the Dodabetta Tea Factory in Ooty. A must visit for all tea lovers, it offers an insight into the complete process of tea cultivation and tea making. Nestling at a height of 8000 feet, the place offers spectacular views of the valley. From the origin of tea in the world and India to the evolution of tea in the Nilgiris, one can know everything about tea here. Visitors can witness the tea manufacturing process as well. There is a souvenir shop where you can buy a variety of tea leaves, souvenir cups, plates and more.
